Tattoos, Permanent Cosmetics & Makeup

Unfortunately, there is a lot of confusion about the general safety aspects of permanent cosmetics. Many radiologists have refused to perform tests on individuals with tattoos. Thus, this excessive concern about potential adverse events has prevented some patients from having access to this important diagnostic imaging technique: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)!

A scientific study carried out in 2002 showed that only 1.5% of patients with cosmetic tattoos experienced MR-related problems, and complaints of "burning" sensation or "mild tingling" were reported. Both incidents were transient and did not prevent the respective patients from completing the study. However, decorative tattoos, especially long ones, should be given greater attention because of the potential risk of "burns".

It is worth mentioning that it is important for the patient to report the use of eye makeup, for example, since these can be a source of artifacts, and sometimes it is necessary to remove it prior to the examination.

Although not mandatory, an ice pack may be applied over the tattoo site during MRI. However, the more important it is for the patient to be aware of the potential risk and to inform the team of any unusual sensation at the tattoo site.

Thus, instead of avoiding an MRI, which may be extremely important in the early diagnosis of a pathology; individuals who have tattoos or permanent makeup should inform the radiology team about this fact in order to take proper precautions, avoid complications and always ensure the best results!
